1.) Gardening

Whether you grow a garden of vegetables or love to tend to beautiful flowers, this is an excellent (and therapeutic!) activity perfect for seniors. It is a great way to spend a little zen time solo or it can be a wonderful hobby that you take up with friends or family. 

Prior to getting started, do a little research! Check out the soil conditions in your area, and see what works best for your climate. Some plants are easier than others for beginners! Marigolds, impatients, zucchini, tomatoes, and herbs would be a great place to start. If mobility is an issue, consider an indoor container garden! Mint, basil, thyme, and more can be grown in little pots right on your windowsill.

2.) Book Club

Do you love to read? There is nothing quite like getting lost in the magic of a good book. From science fiction to romance to high fantasy, whole new worlds await between the pages of a novel. While reading tends to be a more solitary activity, it can definitely be enjoyed by starting, or joining, a book club! Get together once a month to discuss the plot, have light refreshments, and enjoy time spent with other book lovers.

If you are a senior who is vision impaired, know that your love of diving into a good story doesn’t have to be put on hold. Instead, you can switch things up and go for an audiobook! There are millions of books available as audiobooks, with new ones getting added each and every day. These audiobooks give seniors and other visually impaired people a chance to enjoy the stories they love. 

3.) Cards and Board Games

There is nothing quite like a bit of healthy competition to rouse interest and build up comradery. Monopoly, Bridge, trivia, puzzles, and more are all excellent ways to stay connected with those around you as well as keep the mind healthy and engaged.

The summertime is also an excellent opportunity to move things outdoors! Sit and play games on the patio with your friends, or engage in outdoor activities such as horseshoes or shuffleboard. No matter what you choose to do, you are sure to find something to pique your interest. Just make sure you laugh and make lots of memories along the way!

4.) Take Up a Fitness Routine

If there is one thing that seniors can really do for their health, it’s exercising! However, we know that it isn’t always everyone’s favorite, nor is it the easiest thing to get up and do, especially if you have mobility issues or aches and pains. Don’t worry, though! We aren’t asking you to get up and train for the New York City Marathon. Instead, find something you love doing that also moves your body.

For some folks, this could include water aerobics or swimming in the local pool. Water is great for joints, as it is low impact. Or maybe, you thought about taking a yoga or spin class, but just never had the time between all your obligations at work and home. Retirement is the ideal time to try any and all of these options out! Even if you end each day by simply taking a walk with your loved one or the family dog, soak it up – you’ve earned these moments of peace and quiet. 

5.) Get Creative

Sometimes, getting a new hobby means thinking a bit creatively. For some people, trying their hand at art or music can seem intimidating. Unfortunately, many believe that they have to be the next Rembrandt or Picasso to try art when that just isn’t true. Art is for everyone! Painting, watercolor, photography, collage, crafts – there are dozens of great options to choose from, and none of them are one size fits all.
